U.S. Rep. Steve Womack, R-Rogers

U.S. Rep. Steve Womack, R-Rogers, who has risen through the ranks of Congress to chair key committees since first being elected in 2010, announced Tuesday (May 20) his intent to run for another term as Arkansas’ 3rd District Congressman.

If re-elected, it would be Womack’s 9th two-year term in Congress.

Womack, 68, is chairman of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation, Housing, and Urban Development (THUD), and previously was chairman of the House Budget Committee and Chairman of the Financial Services and General Government (FSGG) Subcommittee on Appropriations. Womack also is chairman of the West Point Board of Visitors.

Prior to being elected to Congress, Womack was the mayor of Rogers. He is a retired colonel in the Arkansas Army National Guard with 30 years of military service.

“I’m running for reelection in Congress because I believe now, more than ever, our country needs strong, principled leadership,” Womack noted in a statement. “With President Trump back in the White House, we have a monumental opportunity to get our fiscal house in order, enact a pro-growth agenda, and pass on a stronger, safer America to future generations. Representing my friends and neighbors in Congress has been the honor of my life, and I’m well positioned to fight for the Third District and for Arkansas values in Washington.”

Womack’s most recent GOP primary was his tightest since defeating Cecile Bledsoe in 2010 with 52% of the vote. The 2010 race was an open seat for the 3rd District, with then U.S. Rep. John Boozman running for U.S. Senator. Womack defeated former Arkansas Sen. Clint Penzo in the 2024 GOP primary with 54% of the vote.

Grant Tennille, chair of the Democratic Party of Arkansas, disputed Womack’s pledge to seek fiscal responsibility.

“Rep. Womack announced his run for a ninth term in Congress, singing the same old song about fiscal responsibility that he always has,” Tennille said. “The problem is that on Congressman Womack’s watch, we’ve added almost $23 Trillion to the national debt, and he’s ready to keep borrowing to pay for Trump’s tax cut for the rich. At the very least, the citizens of the 3rd district could use a Congressman who is better at math.”
