The Mount Sequoyah Center in Fayetteville recently opened an expanded Clay Studio at 150 N. Skyline Drive. The Windgate Foundation supported the expansion.

According to a news release, the new 1,900-square-foot studio is twice the size of the original one, which launched in 2022. Demand for additional space led to the need for the expansion. The project created dedicated areas for hand-building and wheel-throwing, enhancing efficiency and safety.

A spokeswoman said the final numbers for the expansion have yet to be calculated. The Windgate Foundation provided an $18,000 grant for the expansion, which was completed by Mount Sequoyah Center’s maintenance staff without the need for an architect.

“The response to our Clay Studio has been phenomenal,” said Jordan Meyers, Clay Studio manager. “This expansion allows us to welcome more artists, offer a wider range of workshops, and further cultivate a vibrant creative community. We are incredibly grateful to the Windgate Foundation for their support in making this vision a reality.”

The expansion increased membership capacity from 30 to 60, upgraded electrical and plumbing infrastructure, and added equipment for clay recycling and additional operations.

“This expansion not only benefits established and emerging ceramicists but also serves as a model for sustainable arts programming at Mount Sequoyah,” said CEO Emily Gentry.

The Mount Sequoyah Center has 15 employees and some additional seasonal staff.
