NorthWest Arkansas Community College in Bentonville recently opened enrollment for its new trail technician program. Classes for the 12-week program start Sept. 13.

The program, which is completed over 12 weekends, is expected to meet the growing demand for skilled professionals in the trail industry. It offers training in trail construction, maintenance and management. Students will receive hands-on experience and in-depth knowledge about the field. The curriculum includes courses in trail construction and maintenance, planning and design, heavy equipment operation, welding for trails and small engine repair.

“We are excited to launch this program in a format that is accessible to a broader range of students,” said Lori Greminger, trail technician program director at NWACC. “Our weekend classes allow individuals to gain valuable skills without disrupting their weekday responsibilities, and our partnerships with top organizations ensure a high-quality educational experience.”

The program is offered in partnership with organizations such as American Trails, the Professional Trail Builders Association, the Trail Skills Project, The DIRTT Project, Trail Tools and IMBA Europe.

Graduates will receive certificates for proficiency in trail technician and proficiency in trail management. The certificates can be used to complete a technical certificate in trail construction and management when additional construction courses are added. Graduates will be prepared to earn the National Occupational Competency Testing Institute level-1 trail technician certification.

According to a news release, the ideal program candidates include those “currently working in the trail industry, aspiring trail builders, trail bosses, and volunteers passionate about trail development and maintenance.”

The student capacity is 12 for the welding classes and 24 for the other classes. Brett Schoffner, owner of Nomad Trails, will teach the weekend classes. NWACC plans to host classes for the program each semester, starting in September and February. The deadline to enroll in the first program sequence is Sept. 6.
