ABB, ATU-Ozark work together on workforce development

ABB Ozark and Arkansas Tech University-Ozark Campus recently launched a career readiness pilot program as a collaborative workforce development initiative for Franklin County and the surrounding region.
Program participants have the opportunity to complete four modules under the guidance of ATU-Ozark Campus automation technology and air conditioning and refrigeration instructors.
Classes for the pilot program began June 3. Those who successfully complete all four modules will receive an industry certification from the Smart Automation Certification Alliance (SACA) and three hours of college credit for Introduction to Manufacturing.
The Arkansas Workforce Challenge Grant may be able to cover the total cost of training, and ATU personnel are prepared to guide participants in the program through the application process, noted an ATU news release.
The pre-career training pilot program is aimed at equipping individuals with the essential skills and applied knowledge needed for success in the industrial sector, said Ryan Mikles, ATU-Ozark vice chancellor of business innovation and economic development.
“This collaborative effort underscores our commitment to providing accessible, high-quality education tailored to meet the workforce demands of our region. We are excited to offer participants the opportunity to gain industry-relevant certifications and valuable transferable skills while paving the way for potential employment opportunities at ABB,” Mikles said.
Participants will learn about motor operations and systems, shop floor operations, mechanical assembly and safe brazing techniques. The program also will help participants develop team responsibility, problem solving and communication skills.
“ATU-Ozark is committed to our partnership with ABB, and we look forward to our continued work with them and other industry partners to help meet the needs of our region and state,” said Dr. Sheila Jacobs, ATU-Ozark chancellor.
According to its website, ABB’s motor manufacturing facility in Ozark is the region’s third-largest employer and manufactures approximately 3,000 Baldor-Reliance industrial electric motors every week.
