Gov. Asa Hutchinson has appointed Steve Cox of Jonesboro to the University of Arkansas Board of Trustees. His term expires March 1, 2028. Cox replaces Ben Hyneman.

“Steve has been a testament to the excellence of the University of Arkansas for years,” Gov. Hutchinson said. “Throughout his athletic career with the university and in the NFL, Cox has demonstrated the kind of hard work and skill that hearken to Arkansas’ roots. His love for the Hogs goes without saying, and I am confident that with his professional background, knowledge and experience, he will be a tremendous asset to the board of trustees.”

Cox is a native of Charleston, Ark., and graduated from the University of Arkansas with a bachelor’s degree in business administration.

He played football for the Razorbacks, where he led the nation in punting with an average of 46.5 yards per punt. He was named All Southwest Conference in 1979 and 1980 and All American in 1980 by United Press International, Sporting News, Pro College & Football News Weekly and Football News.

Cox had an eight-year career in the NFL with the Cleveland Browns and the Washington Redskins. He earned a Super Bowl ring with Washington in Super Bowl XXII. He has also been inducted into the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame, named to the Razorback All Century Team, and inducted into the University of Arkansas Sports Hall of Honor.

Since his retirement from the NFL, Cox has been involved in banking, conservation and economic development in Northeast Arkansas. He is a managing partner of Rainwater & Cox, a limited liability company that owns and manages agricultural and commercial real estate. Cox also serves on the St. Bernards Hospital Board and is a member of the Jonesboro City Water & Light Board of Directors.

He lives in Jonesboro with his wife Virginia Rainwater Cox. They have two sons: Weston Cox and Stephen Cox, who is married to Madeline Gill Cox.
