Mark McLean of FedEx Freight wins ATA’s technician skills competition
Mark McLean, a FedEx Freight technician from Montgomery, N.Y., won Grand Champion at the 13th annual National Technician Skills Competitions hosted by the American Trucking Associations’ Technology and Maintenance Council. The competitions took place Sept. 16-18 in Orlando, Fla.
McLean and Doug Nickels won the team competition for FedEx Freight, and it is the only company to win the team competition since it started five years ago, according to an ATA news release.
Darrell Duggan, of Wal-Mart Transportation LLC, won the TMCSuperTech Trailer Technician Competition. Bonnie Greenwood, a student from WyoTech in Laramie, Wyo., won the TMCFutureTech National Student Technician Competition. Greenwood was the first woman to win the competition.
This was McLean’s third time to win Grand Champion, the most since the event started.
“All of the competitors at TMCSuperTech and TMCFutureTech set a professional standard for our entire industry to strive for, but Mark’s commitment to excellence raises that standard,” said Chris Spear, ATA president and CEO. “I want to congratulate him, and all of the competitors in Orlando for their hard work these past few days and all year round keeping America’s trucks moving.”
Eric Rusk and Steven Frye, both of McKee Foods Transportation, participated in the competition after winning the technician championship hosted by the Arkansas Trucking Association in July. Rusk and Frye were among 104 technicians from across the nation who competed in the event’s championship round Sept. 18.
