Two professors at the University of Arkansas were recently named as fellows by the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

David Stahle, a professor of geosciences, received the award for his contributions to the field of dendrochronology, the study of tree rings. Ingrid Fritsch, a professor of chemistry, was given the nod due to her contributions in the field of magnetohydrodynamically coupled electrodes and the development of microband electrodes.

Stahle also received a $418,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to develop a multi-century tree ring chronology to help build a record of climate change in the Amazon River basin, according to a press release issued by the university.

“I am grateful to the colleagues who advanced my nomination and am pleased that the committee mentioned my conservation work with old-growth forests, which is the most important thing I can do,” Stahle said.

Fritsch, who holds patents on 10 inventions and has co-founded two startups, in 2014 was named as a fellow by the National Academy of Inventors.

“It is a deep honor to receive this significant recognition for my research and humbling to be listed among the other distinguished scientists who are fellows,” Fritsch said.
