The frontrunner in the Republican presidential field will pay a visit to Northeast Arkansas, just days before the presidential filing period begins in Little Rock. According to a post on his presidential website, Republican Dr. Ben Carson will be in West Memphis Friday afternoon (Oct. 30) for a campaign stop.

The event in Lehr Arena at West Memphis High School will be two days after the latest GOP presidential debate and two days before filing for the March 1 primary begins. Carson visited Little Rock in August for his first campaign stop in the state. Since then, he has battled to be in the top tier of Republican candidates.

A CBS/New York Times national poll on Monday showed Carson with a 26-21 lead over fellow Republican Donald Trump.

The visit to West Memphis may be strategic as well. In addition to Arkansas having its primary on March 1, neighboring Tennessee will also vote that day while Mississippi will vote March 8. The West Memphis event begins at 6 p.m., with doors opening at 4 p.m.

The Arkansas filing period begins at noon Nov. 2 and is open until noon Nov. 9 at the Capitol in Little Rock. Republican presidential candidate and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee (R) said he will file Monday and personally submit the paperwork and the $25,000 filing fee.
