The next meeting of the Central Arkansas Political Animals Club takes place next Tuesday, June 23rd at 11:30 a.m. at the Grand Hall of the Governor’s Mansion.

Little Rock Acting Superintendent Baker Kurrus will be the featured guest and he’ll answer: What now for the Little Rock School District?”

Talk Business & Politics conducted a brief online interview with the busy superintendent in advance of the PAC meeting.

TB&P: Why did you choose to step into this role at this juncture of your life?

Baker Kurrus: I accepted the challenge because I think I have a chance to make a difference. The school district and the community needed someone who could step up quickly and start the process of rebuilding.

TB&P: Now that you’ve had a few weeks under your belt, what do you think are the biggest challenges facing LRSD?

Kurrus: There are three big challenges: remaking the organization; building community support; financial stability and capital budgeting.

TB&P: Are the solutions to LRSD multi-year fixes or generational fixes?

Kurrus: Progress will be incremental, but it has already begun, and it will be steady. Measurement by test scores is only one assessment.

To attend the Political Animals Club meeting it will cost you $20 (and it includes lunch). Email [email protected] to reserve your space.
