Kurrus Named New Little Rock School District Superintendent
From Sarah Chaffin with our content partner, KATV Ch. 7:
The Arkansas Board of Education met Tuesday afternoon to name a new superintendent for the Little Rock School District.
Baker Kurrus is a former Little Rock School Board member and had been named by state Education Commissioner Tony Wood to lead a committee on district finances.
Arkansas Department of Education Commissioner Johnny Key recommended Kurrus and proposed that qualification requirements be waived in favor of hiring Kurrus. Key said he could think of no one better to lead the district.
The board voted unanimously in favor of waiving the qualifications as a one-time deal in order to name Kurrus as superintendent.
In a press conference Tuesday afternoon, Kurrus said he was humbled to be chosen.
“I know it’s going to be difficult, but I don’t want to ever overlook the excellence we have in this school district,” Kurrus said. “We have issues and we have problems, but we have a lot to be proud of.”
