Saturday, April 18, 2015
1:00 p. m.
There are thousands of stories resting among the graves contained within Oak Cemetery, stories that center on politicians, city officials, military veterans, schoolteachers, deputy marshals and outlaws, as well as many others from all walks of life. One unique tale concerns a man that had interactions with several key players who were involved with one of the most infamous and dramatic events in the history of the United States of America. Richard Smoot: Orbiting Booth's Inner Circle presents the fascinating story of a Fort Smithian involved in the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln.
At 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 18th, research volunteer Mark Potter will discuss the life of Richard Mitchell Smoot, a native of Maryland who spent his final years in Fort Smith. Shortly before his death, Smoot told the story of his involvement in an event that was the first of its kind, and it is the resulting book that will be the centerpiece of this presentation.
The event if offered free with museum admission: $5 adults, $2 children, under age six are free.
