Forty Under 40: Jonathan Coker
Jonathan Coker’s path in financial management has remained steadfast throughout high school, college and his 12-year professional career, but he credits mentors for propelling him toward success in a field that’s difficult to launch. He now co-owns Wilson Coker Wealth Advisors LLC.
A native of White Hall, Coker earned a finance degree from the University of Central Arkansas and a master’s in business from the University of Arkansas-Little Rock.
Coker is naturally inclined toward the financial industry, having inherited a mind for mathematics from his mother, a calculus teacher. A portfolio management class with Stephens Inc., taken during business school, cemented his career path.
Coker worked for Morgan Stanley, then for Merrill Lynch as a junior partner. There, Kevin Wilson served as both mentor and friend, and in 2009, the two opened their current business, an independent Raymond James firm.
“What we do is very relationship-based, and the barrier to entry in our industry is difficult,” Coker said. “It was daunting to be 24 years old asking to manage someone’s life savings. Kevin and I share business philosophies and values, and I wouldn’t be where I am without him.”
Coker also credits his father, who owned the iconic Colonial Steakhouse in Pine Bluff, for giving him an appreciation for service.
Coker has been active with Springdale-based Business Networking International, as well as the Pinnacle Toastmasters Club.
