Longtime NWA banker J.P. Sexton has been honored with an award he was responsible for creating.

Sexton, vice president of mortgage lending at Centennial Bank in Fayetteville, was named the 2014 Mortgage Banker of the Year by the Mortgage Bankers Association of Arkansas. The honor was presented at the group’s fall conference held Nov. 2-3 in Rogers.

Other finalists were Justin Moore, vice president of mortgage lending with Simmons First Mortgage in Rogers, and Maria Lau, senior vice president of mortgage lending at Arvest Bank in Fort Smith.

Sexton has been a mortgage lender since 1986 and is the immediate past president of the MBAA (president during the 2012-2013 term) and served five years on the organization’s board of directors.

The award was established in 2012, during Sexton’s term as president.

Sexton joined Liberty Bank of Arkansas in Fayetteville in December 2004. Publicly held Home BancShares Inc., the holding company for Centennial Bank, bought Liberty Bank’s 46 bank offices in June 2013 for $280 million.
