Newly minted attorney Gary DeWitt is giving Springdale a try. The 45 year old, who spent nearly 20 years in the information technology field, traded in his career in computers for one in law.

He enrolled at the University of Arkansas three years ago at the age of 42, and now that law school is done, he’s looking for clients.

He recently bought the building at 120 N. Commercial St. in downtown Springdale for $155,000 and completed a renovation. When he first looked at the 2,505-SF building, he didn’t like it. But when he learned that Walton family interests had purchased properties just south of there on Emma Avenue, he figured the deal was a good one.

“When I heard about what was going on in downtown, that changed my mind,” he said.

Tyson Foods Inc. has also recently bought a downtown property to add to what it already owned on and around Emma.

When DeWitt entered into negotiations for the property, he realized he was buying it from legendary Springdale attorney Charlie Davis, a former agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigations.

“I hadn’t heard of him until I looked at the building,” DeWitt said. “But now, everybody tells me a Charlie story.”

DeWitt will focus on estate planning, elder law and bankruptcy.
