The Northwest Arkansas Regional Airport in Highfill has been awarded $2.2 million in federal funding to support facility upgrades and expansions.

The grant was announced Tuesday in a joint news release from U.S. Senators Mark Pryor and John Boozman and Congressman Steve Womack, all of Arkansas. It was awarded through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Aviation Administration.

This funding is supported by the FY14 omnibus appropriations bill, which was signed into law in January.

The money, according to the news release, will go toward widening a taxi lane, allowing larger aircrafts to access the concourse, and covering terminal expansion costs incurred to meet current passenger demand.

In all, eight Arkansas airports will receive a combined $4.1 million from the FAA. Other airports are in Calico Rock, Fordyce, Mena, Paris, Searcy, Waldron and Woodruff County.
