Election Central: Here Comes The Money

From the Election Central campaign trail, here are today’s political headlines captured in our daily brief.

SPEAKER CARTER IS ACTING GOVERNOR
In a rare collision of circumstances, Speaker of the House Davy Carter will serve as Acting Governor all week long.

Carter — third in succession to be Governor — will serve as Acting Governor for nearly seven days starting Sunday. As we first reported three weeks ago, Gov. Mike Beebe is headed to Europe on a trade mission to England, France and the Czech Republic, part of an effort to meet with new and existing trade prospects.

With the resignation of Lt. Gov. Mark Darr and an out-of-state trip by Sen. President Michael Lamoureux, Carter is next in line. Carter said his agenda is no agenda. He assured the Governor that he wouldn’t be very activist in his absence.

“I told the Governor I’d try not to mess anything up,” Carter said.

FUNDRAISING NUMBERS IN U.S. SENATE RACE
Because we can never get enough of the U.S. Senate race, Tom Cotton released a day early his fundraising numbers for the second quarter. Cotton, the Republican nominee, says he raised more than $2.2 million from April to June. Pryor, who released his second quarter numbers on Friday, raised a little over $1.5 million, he said.

If you want to see more action from the two campaigns, just check out the video from yesterday’s Talk Business & Politics show. Cotton spokesman David Ray and Pryor deputy campaign manager Erik Dorey volleyed exchanges on faith, disaster relief, Social Security and Medicare. The discussion ended with a potential vocal rendering of Cumbayah and a beer summit.

You can catch the full Ray-Dorey interview at this link.

MORE FUNDRAISING ON THE WAY
Tomorrow, more campaign contributions should be received as the July 15th deadline for state and federal candidates to file financial reports takes place. We’ll round up all of that news and more in Tuesday’s Election Central Daily Brief.
