The nonprofit organization Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Arkansas announced Tuesday it has hired Sarah Heimer as executive director.

Heimer will fill the seat vacated in April by Erin Rongers, who left after five years to take a job as executive director for The Cancer Challenge.

“I am thrilled to join a talented staff and board of directors to make sure that we are reaching those who need us most,” Heimer said. “Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Arkansas has been changing lives for 21 years. I believe that mentoring relationships are essential in helping youth to make positive choices.”

Heimer, who started work at the Fayetteville-based nonprofit on Tuesday, previously worked as development director for the Boys & Girls Club of Bloomington, Indiana.

During her two years in that position, she doubled annual giving, secured the largest gift in the organization’s history and spearheaded a city-wide youth entrepreneurship program, according to press release from Big Brothers Big Sisters.

Heimer previously lived in Northwest Arkansas in 2007 while working at New Life Ranch in Concord, Oklahoma. She has a bachelor’s degree in lifespan human development from Kansas State University and lives with her husband and three children in Fayetteville.
