2014 Political Filing Period Set To Officially Open
On Monday as state legislators return to Little Rock for another round of private option voting, the state capitol will be flooded with political candidates as the 2014 filing season opens.
The filing period kicks off at noon on Monday, Feb. 24th and closes at noon on March 3rd. The political primaries are slated for May 20th.
The main attractions in this year’s political races include contests for Arkansas Governor and the U.S. Senate.
Two Republicans – Curtis Coleman and Asa Hutchinson – have declared they will seek the party’s nomination for Governor. Mike Ross is the only announced Democrat for the Governor’s seat. Also, the remaining six constitutional offices will be up for election.
The U.S. Senate race pits incumbent Democratic Sen. Mark Pryor versus Republican challenger Cong. Tom Cotton.
And control of the Arkansas General Assembly will be in play in 2014. The big focus will be on whether or not Democrats can wrestle control of the Arkansas House of Representatives from Republicans. The GOP gained a majority in the House by a 51-48 margin in 2012. There is one Green Party elected House member.
The Arkansas Senate is more comfortably controlled by Republicans by a 22-13 margin.
Throughout the week, Talk Business & Politics will be tabulating a spreadsheet with all of the House and Senate races up for grabs as a resource for our readers and viewers.
