A new mobile app created by physicians at Ozark Dermatology Clinic allows patients to send in photos of skin issues and consult with their doctor via the app instead of coming into the office for an appointment.

After downloading the app, users are prompted to choose their physician, take photos of the problem area and answer questions about their issues, according to a news release from ODC.

The app provides a secure checkout, and a dermatologist will review the photos and have a diagnosis and treatment plan — which users can access via the app — ready within 48 hours, according to the release. The staff at ODC will be able to issue prescriptions based on the photos.

The mobile app was created and developed by dermatologists Chris Schach, Kevin St. Clair and Eric Stewart.

Although similar apps have launched during the last few years, the ODC was the first clinic to launch its own app, and its company OnlineDermClinic is the first to allow custom branding, meaning any physician’s office can purchase an app from them and use it for their patients at onlinedermclinic.com.

“We believe that this technology may lead to earlier diagnosis of skin cancer and other skin diseases,” Schach said.

He says the mobile app also makes it possible for physicians to evaluate and treat greater numbers of patients. “The annual American Academy of Dermatology free skin cancer screening reported 93,000 people examined in-person by dermatologists in 2010,” Schach said. “By using our teledermatology system, these same dermatologists could screen 270,000 or more, and offer their services to the entire state where they are licensed. More people screened results in more lives saved.”
