Saint Jean Industries, a French-based firm with an automobile parts manufacturing facility in Heber Springs, is planning to lay off most of its local workforce by year’s end.

City officials confirmed that 300 layoffs were announced at the factory last week.  About 40 workers will be retained.

The Saint Jean Industries plant was a provider of parts to General Motors, but it recently lost the contract when it was up for renewal.

The jobs were high-paying factory jobs and the total layoffs could impact about 5% of the Heber Springs workforce.
