Spay Makes Play For Springdale Land

Spay Arkansas, a nonprofit that provides discounted spay and neuter procedures for low-income pet owners, wants to buy the property it currently rents in Springdale.

Spay’s business manager, Romaine Kobilsek, said talks are underway to purchase the 1,920-SF building at 1909 W. Huntsville Ave., the nonprofit’s clinic since March 2011. The building is currently owned by Ronald Chouinard.

As land negotiations continue, Spay will gear up for a big Dec. 1 fundraiser at Greenhouse Grille in Fayetteville and a capital campaign beginning in January.

Kobilsek said Spay is trying to raise in excess of $100,000.

Kobilsek, formerly a logistics analyst and purchasing agent for several Fortune 500 companies, said the time is right to make a splash.

Spay recently celebrated its 10,000th procedure, and the clinic has done well enough in the last two-and-a-half years to become self-sustaining and create five paid positions.

Whereas past Spay fundraisers were more of a community affair, December’s silent auction will feature high-end items donated by Wal-Mart Stores Inc. vendors.

“When we went into this we didn’t know if we were sustainable, but we are and that’s good news,” Kobilsek said. “Is it the right building in the right location? We think we made a good decision.”
