Fayetteville Flyer Expands With Sports Offerings

The hyperlocal news site fayettevilleflyer.com has launched a significant expansion of its coverage by partnering with a correspondent to provide sports content on the Arkansas Razorbacks and Fayetteville Bulldogs.

Terry Wood, who covered the Razorbacks and Bulldogs as sports editor of the Fayetteville daily newspaper Northwest Arkansas Times from 1998 to 2009, is providing game coverage, features, opinion and analysis during the football season.

The Flyer’s sports coverage can be found in a dedicated tab on the website.

Dustin Bartholomew, co-owner of the website, said the expanded sports offerings have been a goal for a while. He and business partner Todd Gill had previously sprinkled in University of Arkansas sports news — mostly provided by the university sports information office — with their primary news and events coverage.

“We’ve done some UA sports items in the past, but we’ve never really focused on it like we are now,” he said. “You’ve got to cover the Razorbacks, and I’ve always wanted to add Fayetteville High School coverage. That’s the hometown team and it just seems logical.”

Wood said he will not travel to Razorback road games, but will cover all Bulldog football games in conference play.

Essentially, he is contributing three Razorback-related items and three Bulldog-related items each week.

Bartholomew said Wood, a UA graduate, is a great fit.

“I grew up reading Terry in the paper,” said Bartholomew, who is from Prairie Grove. “He is a veteran [reporter] and has a lot of experience, which is great for us.”

Wood is working on a freelance basis, Bartholomew said, which will likely continue through the school year.

“We really haven’t begun to try and monetize it, but we already have Fayetteville football coverage paid for for the entire year,” Bartholomew said. “We’ve had a good response from the public and our sponsors.”
