Emma is the story of Emma Woodhouse, a “handsome, clever, rich” young woman who delights in making matches between the inhabitants of her small English village Highbury. Emma determines to help her young friend Harriet Smith make a good marriage and in the process sets off a chain reaction of mishaps that leave Emma blind to her own feelings. The 1814 novel is considered a masterpiece of English literature known for its humor and satire. The story has been adapted many times for screen. Audiences may know the story from the 1996 Miramax production starring Gwyneth Paltrow and Jeremy Northam or from the 2009 Masterpiece Classic adaptation starring Romala Garai and Jonny Lee Miller. This adaptation by Michael Bloom was created for the Cleveland Playhouse in 2010.
