The occupational therapy assistant (OTA) program at Arkansas Tech University-Ozark Campus has achieved accreditation status by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE).

The ACOTE accreditation lasts five years and follows an intensive self-study review and on-site visit, which was held April 1-3 at Morton Hall in Russellville, where the OTA program is housed.

“The OTA department is very proud to receive accreditation from [ACOTE]. This means that Arkansas Tech-Ozark is able to meet the needs of the local healthcare community with a recognized occupational therapy assistant program,” said OTA Chair Adrienne Shelton said.

With the accreditation status, OTA graduates may sit for the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy. Once the exam is passed, graduates become a certified occupational therapy assistant, or COTA.

“Acquiring national accreditation is an example of the Ozark Campus’ commitment to offering a quality educational environment, assuring health care providers and students of learning excellence,” said ATU-Ozark Chief Academic Officer Bruce Sikes.

Arkansas Tech-Ozark provides students in the region with several Allied Health options, including registered nursing, licensed practical nursing, paramedic/emergency medical services, physical therapy assistant and health information technology. This fall semester, cardiovascular technology also will be an offering at its Chaffee Crossing location.

As part of the accreditation process, Arkansas Tech-Ozark is required to submit a plan of action to correct any deficiencies noted in the ACOTE on-site visit.
