More Mercy for Wal-Mart
Mercy for Animals has struck again.
The nonprofit animal welfare group recently bought a full-page advertisement that ran in two zoned editions of the Northwest Arkansas Newspapers LLC conglomerate — the Benton County Daily Record and the Rogers Morning News.
The ad called out Wal-Mart Stores Inc. for what it perceives as the retail giant’s failure to eliminate pig gestation crates from its pork supply chain.
The ad boldly urges, “WALMART: QUIT STALLING” and then declares: “It’s time for Walmart to let pigs live better.”
You might remember when Whispers told you last fall of MFA showing its displeasure for Walmart by driving a mobile billboard truck with giant images of pigs in gestation crates around the company’s Bentonville headquarters.
The Los Angeles-based group followed that up with another publicity stunt in December, when it honored CEO Mike Duke’s Dec. 7 birthday by adopting a mother pig — rescued from a factory farm — in Duke’s name. The group then sent Duke an adoption certificate.
Phil Letten, the campaign’s national coordinator, said MFA is targeting Walmart because the company is a leading retailer with the power to change the supply chain.
Walmart, through a spokesman, reiterated its stance of not tolerating animal mistreatment.
Incidentally, going by the newspaper’s rate sheet of $23.25 per column inch on Sundays, the ad cost MFA about $3,000.
