The Downstream Casino Resort in Quapaw, Okla., near Joplin, recently opened a second hotel, the 152-room Kappa Tower.

The new hotel, next door to the resort’s original 222-room hotel, also features a full-service spa and other upscale amenities.

The $50 million hotel/spa expansion project created 400 construction jobs last year, and has added about 100 permanent jobs, according to a news release.

JCJ Architecture of Hartford, Conn., provided the design and architecture services for the new hotel. Manhattan Construction Group of Tulsa was the construction contractor.

Downstream spokesman Sean Harrison said the cost of the entire property’s construction, furnishings and equipment now stands at $361 million. More information about the resort’s economic impact will be released at the grand opening celebration for the Kappa Tower on Jan. 18, he said.

The resort, owned by the Downstream Development Authority for the Quapaw Tribe, opened in July 2008 and now employs about 1,200. It has an annual payroll of about $42 million, and spends about $30 million annually on goods and services purchased in the area, according to its website.
