Official Walmart Announcement Made in Springdale
City of Springdale officials, including mayor Doug Sprouse, were among those who on Thursday announced official plans for the building Walmart Supercenter No. 4108.
As previously reported by the Northwest Arkansas Business Journal, the 180,000-SF store will create about 300 new jobs. The store will be built just north of Elm Springs Road, between I-540 and Oak Grove Road.
According to a release by the Springdale Chamber of Commerce, the store will be part of a larger retail development that includes 11 “out” lots that will become homes for restaurants, as well as other retail outlets. Sprouse also said the recent approval of bonds by Springdale voters will allow for the extension of 56th Street north from the new Don Tyson Parkway I-540 interchange to Elm Springs Road, creating a major connector for traffic and future retail development.
Construction of the Walmart Supercenter will begin next year, with an opening planned for 2014. The chamber release indicated the store is the largest currently being built by Walmart in the United States. Also, in addition to energy-efficient design elements that have become standard for the company, the new location will be the first in Northwest Arkansas with LED lighting in the parking lot.
