Hallelujah Girls is spa dee-licious

FORT SMITH — If you’re looking for laughs, then The Hallelujah Girls at the Fort Smith Little Theatre delivers.

When Sugar Lee Thompkins (Debbie Carney) buys a church with her friends to turn into a spa, everything seems perfect. Then Bunny Sutherland (Tanya Hall) enters the scene and shows that even when things are bad they can always get worse. Sugar must deal with her ex-boyfriend, running a business, and the mayhem of her friends in this Southern comedy.

The play’s comedic timing is dead-on, and director Angela Covey pulls it off without a hitch. With a great cast and team of dedicated set builders, Covey always has what she needs.

“This play is by the same authors of the last two plays I have directed, and I particularly like them,” she said. “I feel they can parallel peoples lives.”

Hallelujah Girls written by Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope, and Jamie Wooten, all talented in creating a humorous cast and individual characters: Carlene is the person that wants the best for everyone and secretly the best for herself, Nita the hopeless romantic, Mavis is the loyal friend and sometimes matchmaker and Crystal reminds us that ignorance is bliss. Sugar daries to dream, Bunny reminds us that it can always get worse, Bobby depicts the good times and hardworking Mama’s boy Porter.

Hallelujah Girls had the crowd laughing nonstop and clapping during every scene change. With the wide variety of jokes, there was something to tickle every phone bome at one point or another.

The show continues this weekend: Saturday (Sept. 15) at 8 p.m. and Sunday (Sept. 19) at 2 p.m., then Sept, 19-22.
