FedEx Finally Delivers Project Plan

It was August when we first wrote about a FedEx Ground expansion at the company’s Lowell facility.

We received a tip indicating the facility would triple in size. A FedEx Ground spokeswoman responded with a statement indicating it does not “comment on specific projects under consideration.”

Turns out our tipster was right. We checked back with FedEx Ground last month, and corporate communications member David Westrick replied via email that the expanded facility is part of a “nationwide network expansion to boost daily package volume capacity and further enhance the speed and service capabilities of the FedEx Ground network.”

Westrick also indicated the larger facility, expected to be completed in September, will be about 68,000 SF.

“Jobs will be added as necessary to support increased demand for service in the area,” he wrote, adding that 11 new hubs have been opened since 2005.

Westrick didn’t give specifics in terms of how many new employees might be hired, but said the expansions are done in a manner that can accommodate five to seven years worth of growth.
