Local Doctor Co-Authors Study of Groundbreaking Cancer Treatment
Dr. J. Thaddeus Beck, of Highlands Oncology Group, attended the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium last month. Part of the event was a presentation of a study in which Beck participated.
The study included clinical trials that resulted in extended life expectancy in certain breast cancer patients. The study was published in the Dec. 7 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.
HOG was one of 189 centers — in 24 countries — that participated in the trials, which focused on combining the drugs everolimus and exemestane in treating postmenopausal women with advanced breast cancer. The study, supported by Novartis, found that combining the treatments in women with hormone-receptor positive breast cancer increased life expectancy by 6.9 months.
Beck said participating in the study was “a privilege.” HOG has facilities in Fayetteville and Rogers.
