Republicans Davis and Meggs Declare Candidacies for the House

A few more GOP candidates have recently announced runs for the Arkansas House of Representatives as Republicans battle to gain enough seats to take the majority for the first time in modern history.  The House is currently made up of 46 Republicans and 54 Democrats.

Andy Davis announced last week that he will seek the Pulaski and Saline County District 31 seat currently held by Rep. David Sanders, who is running for the State Senate.  Davis is an engineer and owner of New Water Systems in Little Rock.  He perhaps most widely-known connection is that he is the son-in-law of the late Stanley Reed, who was known and respected around the state.

“I have decided to run for the House of Representatives because I think it is my turn to serve. I have had great examples in my life of people who have served the community in different capacities. My grandfather was a Little Rock Fire Chief, my brother served in the Navy, and my father-in-law was an advocate for Arkansas, especially higher education and agriculture. I believe that as a small business owner, a Christian, and a conservative it is time for me to put my common sense values to work for the people of Arkansas. I have the ability, the experience, and I am able to serve my community. Therefore it is also my duty,” said Davis.

In a possible pick up for Republicans down in Monticello, Gary Meggs announced he will seek the District 9 House seat currently held by Democratic Rep. Sheila Lampkin. Meggs is currently the band director for University of Arkansas at Monticello.  Lampkin made headlines last session for a vote that caused Arkansas Right to Life to take the rare measure of pulling their endorsement of her.

“Just like almost everyone in South Arkansas, I am a conservative,” Meggs said. “So I’ll be running as a Republican. The Democrat Party left conservative folks like me and the people of District 9 some time ago. And like most Arkansans these days, we’re finding that the conservative fiscal and social values of the Arkansas Republican Party now more closely resemble our own.”
