Re-enter Huckabee?
In May, Mike Huckabee announced on his Fox talk show that he would not run for President saying "All the factors say go, but my heart says no." However, if you look closely at his statement, he did leave himself a sliver of hope saying, "I can’t know or predict the future, but I know for now my answer is clear and firm. I will not seek the Republican nomination for President this year."
And with the Presidential field very murky and volatile, some in the Huckabee camp are chattering about the possibility that he might reconsider. The popular national blog RedState posted on this yesterday saying…
According to my sources, former Arkansas governer Mike Huckabee is seriously considering venturing back into the GOP 2012 presidential race. If he decides to do so, he’ll likely announce within the week.
Likewise, Huck’s Army — a popular forum for Huckabee supporters (one I used to moderate) — is encouraging members to write letters and send emails asking Huckabee to reconsider. In a mass email sent to their forum members, they write…
We have become aware that there is a possibility Gov. Huckabee may be prayerfully reconsidering. We wanted to offer you an opportunity to send him a personal message of encouragement.
Of course, this could be little more than Huckabee loyalists hoping this would happen, but the chatter has picked up considerably since the poor performance of Rick Perry last week during the debate and his distant second place showing to Herman Cain in the Florida straw poll. The latest national poll from Zogby shows Perry fading to 18 percent with Cain surging to the lead with 28 percent. However, a CNN poll has a much different result. But the point is the field is still wide open, which could be causing some wishful thinking from Huckabee supporters.
In the meantime, Huckabee is wasting no time trashing Rick Perry every chance he gets.
UPDATE – Randy Davis, the Iowa grassroots activist who spreadheaded the Stuck on Huck effort last spring, weighs in. He is one of the key activists current encouraging supporters to write Huckabee but – although he wishes it was otherwise – he thinks Huckabee ultimately will sit out the 2012 election cycle.
"It’s just that I hear from many supporters who ‘wonder’ if there might be a chance he would re-consider," Davis tells the Tolbert Report. "So I simply set up something where people could pass along their words of encouragement to him or whatever message they would like him to receive."
"As a believer, I only want him to do whatever he feels is following God’s plan and purpose for his life. If that is what he is currently doing- fine. If he would feel re-directed back into this race, that would be great. I would personally like to see that happen, but have accepted the fact back in May it likely will not," explained Davis. "The letters to Mike are just more or less giving people a chance to ‘say their piece’ so to speak and assure him of their prayers and support with whatever path he may take."
