Times a-Changin?

We’ve been told the Arkansas Times is undergoing a transition in staff duties.

Max Brantley, the redoubtable editor of the Times for almost 20 years, will no longer oversee the print product. Instead, he’ll devote his considerable energy to full-time blogging.

Lindsey Millar, the weekly’s entertainment editor who is adept at all things digital, will manage the day-to-day operation of the Times, making assignments, editing, etc.

Millar’s influence already can be seen on the Times’ website, which features a digital edition, databases and podcasts reviewing the week’s events. The print product now has a weekly “Natives Guide,” which appears to be a manual on goods and services in central Arkansas. Millar is a Times hand of several years’ standing.

In addition, the Times, which in its first decade under Brantley’s watch was occasionally described as “the Arkansas Gazette in exile” (ask your parents), will move more toward the alternative weekly end of the news spectrum. What that means in terms of news coverage will be interesting to behold.
