Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar announced June 15 the Migratory Bird Conservation Commission has approved spending up to $5 million to protect more than 26,000 acres of wetlands and associated waterfowl habitats. The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission will receive an unspecified amount of that money.

The money will be put to use on a project called Arkansas River Valley Wetlands Restoration Phase I. This project will restore two highly degraded bottomland hardwood forests totaling 1,412 acres within the Arkansas River Valley.

Partners will restore a 411-acre bottomland hardwood forest block in the Galla Creek Wildlife Management Area in Pope County, and 1,001 acres of bottomland hardwood forest in the Nimrod Lloyd Millwood WMA in Yell County.

The project will benefit species such as mallard, wood duck, Kentucky warblers and American woodcock.
