“True Grit” Exhibit

Beginning June 1, 2011, the Fort Smith Museum of History will offer images and period clothing used in researching set and costume designs for the Coen Brothers movie, True Grit. Exhibit Designer Caroline Speir worked with Academy Award nominee Jess Gonchor on set design. View photographs from the museum’s collection used in to recreate 1870’s Fort Smith. Also, see photographs and period clothing used by Bobi Garland of Western Costuming in her work with the True Grit costume director. Tara Tremaine used images from the museum’s collection in the documentary section of the DVD of True Grit. 
 
View the new exhibit and compare with the movie. The ongoing exhibition will be included as a portion of In the Shadow of the Gallows, which examines the changing perceptions of Fort Smith citizens to that prominent part of the city’s history, the gallows of the Federal Court of the Western District of Arkansas.
