Revolution Technologies LLC of Rogers announced recently that its University of Arkansas iPhone app was ranked the No. 1 college sports app in the list of collegiate and conference apps at the Apple iTunes store.

Revolution Technologies developed the iHog mobile application, launched Sept. 1, 2009, in partnership with the UA. It was one of the first college athletic apps launched and the first among Southeastern Conference schools.

iHog is currently ranked No. 105 overall in the sports category. A sampling of apps ranked higher than iHog are by ESPN, Yahoo Sports and NFL Mobile.

The iHog app, which is a free download, currently has 225,000 downloads worldwide. It provides one-touch access to comprehensive information and unique services about all things Razorback.

Popular features of the iHog include videos, Twitter feeds from various Razorback coaches, interactive blogs and live audio broadcasts.

“Whenever Chuck Barrett is talking, you can listen to him from just about anywhere in the world,” RT CEO Tim Lee said in reference to the UA broadcaster.

Lee said the boom surrounding mobile applications will rival the dot-com boom of the 1990s. Some studies suggest he’s right.

According to an independent study by GetJar, an app marketplace and rival of Apple’s app store, global revenue from mobile applications, including paid downloads and mobile advertising, is expected to increase to $17.5 billion in 2010. That would be a 1,150 percent increase from $1.4 billion in 2010.

Mobilemarketer.com stated recently that revenues could reach $25 billion by 2015.

“The growth we’ll see over the next five years will change the online presence,” Lee said. “More companies will move to mobile apps to improve communication, promote their products and connect more tightly with their customer base.”
