Heavy hors d’oeuvres and drinks were served at the Second Annual River Valley Animal Welfare Coalition benefit for Kitties and Kanines Spay/Neuter Clinic.

Held in the Bonneville House in Fort Smith, nearly 100 attendees also were treated to music by The Rain Kings, a silent and live auction and Beanie Babies.

"We would like to raise $25,000 tonight," said Fort Smith City Director and coalition planning committee member Pam Weber. "Dr. Deborah Waggoner owns Kitties and Kanines Spay/Neuter Clinic and the Coalition’s funds help defray expenses incurred when low-income people come in to have their animals spayed or neutered."

Weber said the Coalition’s main objective is to decrease pet euthanasia through population control. Since the Coalition was formed two years ago in July, more than 6,000 animals have been spayed or neutered.

Everyone attending the event were given the opportunity to purchase a Beanie Baby for $25. Each Beanie Baby had a card detailing which gift certificate or prize they won.

The live auction included a one-week stay at a condo in Barefoot Beach, Fla., a Christmas lights helicopter tour of Fort Smith, tickets to the 2011 College World Series, a catered dinner party for 14, wine, Dallas Cowboys tickets, professional pet portraits, an evening in the private lounge at Mojo’s and a football autographed by Aaron Rodgers, quarterback of the Super Bowl Champion Green Bay Packers.
