Editor’s note: Adam Brandt is a graduate from the Cobra Kai School of Culinary Callousness, where he received their highest award, the Red Apron of Merciless Eating. Aside from eating and talking about eating, he makes pots, paintings, prints, books, photographs, and generally, a big mess. He has been the studio assistant at Mudpuppy Pottery for almost nine years and is attending a local university in a desperate attempt to earn a biology degree.

In a desperate attempt to get spring to act like spring and not winter, I visited yet another frozen treat dispensary this week. Like our adventure a few weeks ago, this week we will be indulging in a variety of decadent goodies, only with less fat. Can this be possible? Stay tuned to find out …

Thanks for staying tuned.

Located next to Papa Murphy’s on Rogers Avenue, is the new home of Goody’s Frozen Yogurt. It is not to be confused with the department store located a few blocks down the road. Here they serve frozen yogurt, not ice cream. This is a yogurt shoppe. Sure, it might not have the same ring to it, but what they lack in a punchy name they make up for in bright decorations and delicious treats.

The staff are very friendly and will gladly explain the simple ordering process to you, but, please allow me. You start off by selecting a cup, either little or big, and then you pick your poison from one or more of the 16 soft serve yogurt dispensers on the wall. You can pick them all if you like. Goody’s offers 37 different flavors, but only 16 are available at any given time. Needless to say, they are constantly rotating flavors in and out, so daily visits are encouraged.

Once you have picked your flavor or flavors of choice, then you move on to the wall-o-toppings. Here you get your choice of 26 different add-ons to pile onto your frozen treat. Everything from breakfast cereal, salty snacks, candies, and traditional toppings get their representation on the wall. Once you have completed this final touch to your masterpiece, you check out.

Here’s where they get you.

The big signs proudly toting the $0.45 per ounce comes back to quickly empty your wallet. You quickly come to the realization that what your eyes measured as a few ounces was a lot more than that and now your jumbo tub of snickerdoodle/peanut butter/mango yogurt topped with pretzels and gummy worms is going to cost you ten bucks.

The good news is that it will more than likely taste awesome regardless of whatever disgusting sounding combo you managed to come up with. I’m a man of simple tastes, so I recommend the combo of orange sorbet with vanilla yogurt. It’s dreamy. Get it? Oh, never mind.

The previously mentioned snickerdoodle is great if you like cinnamon, but be warned that it will totally overpower any other flavors you add to it, thus rendering your creation texturally intense, but tasting a little one-note.

The New Orleans praline is also a big hit in the delicious department. The Rocky Road is about as good as something out of a tub from your grocery store, though. The peanut butter and the Cookies & Cream are top notch as well. Another brilliant combo is pistachio yogurt with sliced almonds.

If you haven’t tried Goody’s yet, I recommend giving them a shot. It is a healthier snack for a warm spring weekend. It won’t even kill your budget as long as you exhibit a little self-control.

More good news! They are about to open a second location in Van Buren to better serve you Pointers out there.

Until next week, good eating to you and yours.
