Dr. Alan Diamond has been approved to conduct clinical research on Huntington’s disease, Washington Regional in Fayetteville announced near the end of March.

Diamond, a neurologist who is fellowship-trained in movement disorder with emphasis on Huntington’s disease, was approved by the Huntington Study Group Credential Committee. He is the director of Washington Regional’s Movement Disorder Center.

Huntington’s disease is a degenerative brain disorder that typically strikes adults in mid-life. While medications can help reduce the severity of some symptoms, there is no cure for Huntington’s disease, and current treatments can’t prevent the physical and mental decline associated with the disorder.

Diamond said via a news release the HSG approval will allow the Movement Disorder Center to “offer access to clinical trials for patients and families who are affected by this genetic disorder.

“Plus, the data we gather will further our understanding of this disorder,” Diamond said.
