"Turning a new page" was the theme of the Grand Opening ceremony for the newly constructed Cedarville Public Library. A large crowd turned out on Sunday (April 17) to help dedicate the town’s first, new library in 46-years.

The new building is a substantial upgrade in size from the previous 750 square foot facility. With more than 2,500 square feet, the new facility includes a meeting room, a children’s section, four computer stations and an early childhood literacy computer area.

Eva White, Crawford County Library Director, opened the ceremony by welcoming everyone and by thanking them for coming out to support the library. She acknowledged all those who participated in the project adding that it was a “long journey.” In keeping with the theme, she commented, “We turned this page today for the Cedarville library.”

White then introduced State Librarian Carolyn Ashcraft, who played a key role in obtaining state funds for the project. Ashcraft applauded Crawford County for opening two new libraries this year. In February, the county library system hosted a grand opening event for the new Van Buren Public Library.

"Crawford County is one of the only counties in the state, if not the only county to have accomplished that,” Ashcraft said.

Ashcraft also said the new Cedarville Library was "a joint effort to improve lifelong learning" by the citizens of Cedarville and the state. Citing the importance of public libraries to cities and rules areas, she pointed out that 71% of people use the public library as its source for internet access.

“Libraries are crucial to communities,” said Ashcraft. “During difficult economies, such as this one, library usage greatly increases and the public begins to utilize services such as the internet and free book or DVD check-out at a higher rate.”

Glenanna O’Mara, President, Friends of the Cedarville Library, shared her appreciation for all of the time and energy everyone poured into making the new library possible.

"This is what you built … this library is for children, teens, adults and seniors, alike. This is your library,” she said.

Following the ceremony, a ribbon cutting marked the new facility’s official opening. Guests were treated to refreshments, punch and given tours of the new building.

The library, located at 737 Pirates Way, is down the hill from its previous home. It is open to the public Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Thursday, 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
