Wal-Mart Watch
Whispers readers who don’t delve into the late-night fake-news comedic stylings of Stephen Colbert might be interested to know that Wal-Mart Stores’ Leslie Dach recently made an appearance on the show.
Dach, who is executive vice president of corporate affairs and government relations for Wal-Mart, was there to tout the retailer’s initiative to “to make food healthier and healthier food more affordable.”
Or, as the ever-snarky Colbert put it: to confirm “the ugly rumors that Wal-Mart is collaborating with the Obama administration to sell fruits and vegetables at a lower price.”
“The customer told us they want to buy healthier food,” Dach said.
Colbert: “This feels like Big Brother mandating through opportunity that I not eat myself into a coma of Cheetos.”
Dach maintained the company is committed to the initiative and thinks it will lead to more sales.
Dach mentioned the company would like to expand its footprint with stores in New York City, which drew some soft heat from Colbert who said, “you can’t put [one] in Manhattan because the island’s not wide enough for one of your stores.”
“Wal-Mart’s annual sales are greater than the economies of many countries,” Colbert said as he introduced Dach. “They’re like China, but with more Chinese products.”
