Womack gains more committee assignments
The appointments for U.S. Rep. Steve Womack, R-Rogers, just keep coming.
On Friday (Jan. 7), Womack, the new Congressman for Arkansas’ 3rd Congressional District, was appointed to three House subcommittees: Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies; Energy and Water Development; and Financial Services and General Government.
The Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies subcommittee covers activities with the Department of Housing and Urban Development; Department of Transportation; Federal Maritime Commission; and the National Transportation Safety Board.
The Energy and Water Development subcommittee works with the Department of Energy; Department of Defense–Civil; Department of the Army; Corps of Engineers–Civil; Department of the Interior; Appalachian Regional Commission; Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board; Delta Regional Authority; and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
The Financial Services and General Government covers the Department of the Treasury; District of Columbia; The Judiciary; Federal Drug Control Programs; National Security Council; White House Office; Independent Agencies; Federal Communications Commission; Federal Election Commission; Federal Trade Commission; Securities and Exchange Commission; Small Business Administration; and the United States Postal Service.
“I’m elated by the fact that my sub-committees assignments will allow me to better serve the people of the 3rd District. Our staff is fully prepared to take on the work and excited about the opportunities involved that come with this great responsibility,” Womack said in a statement.
On Dec. 9, Womack was appointed to the powerful House Appropriations Committee. Typically, freshmen members of the U.S. House are assigned to B committees and move up to A committees after being re-elected and gaining seniority in the House. The other A committees are Ways and Means, Financial Services, Rules, and Energy and Commerce.
Womack was asked Dec. 30 by U.S. Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., if he would serve as a member of the exclusive whip team. McCarthy will be the House GOP whip during the next Congress, which makes him the No. 3 Republican leader in the House.
The whip team, which helps the whip leader collect and count floor votes in the House, is a small and powerful group. There are only nine members of the Democratic whip team under House Majority Whip Rep. James Clyburn.
