Medical Associates of Northwest Arkansas sunk about $2 million into one of the highest-resolution magnetic resonance imaging scanners available in late 2009.

The investment proved worthwhile, as MANA’s imaging department performed an average of 13 MRIs a day in 2010. Perhaps the biggest selling point is the fact the Achieva 3.0 Tesla system can produce images ranging from four to 100 times faster than most scanners in Northwest Arkansas, according to a MANA news release.

As a result of the detail it provides, MANA’s system can assist in earlier and more accurate diagnoses of a variety of medical conditions. It’s also popular with patients due to its open construction.

“For doctors and patients who understand that the latest technology can improve outcomes … the system we have installed represents what they have been looking for: the very latest technology that provides exceptional image quality in the most patient-friendly environment,” said Dr. Steven Harms, a radiologist at MANA’s imaging department.

The system also features software that allows MANA’s radiologists to share digital images with other doctors, surgeons, etc. The images often can be shared within 24 hours, according to the release.
