Beebe Could Send Prison Overflow To Louisiana
At a speech to the Arkansas Sheriffs’ Association on Monday, Gov. Mike Beebe revealed that the state may send hundreds of its prisoners to Louisiana.
Lewis Delavan with our content partner, the Arkansas News Bureau, reports:
Beebe said northern Louisiana has hundreds of empty prison beds, and the Pelican State has offered to accept hundreds of Arkansas’ prisoners for $28 per inmate per day — less than half of what it costs to house state inmates.
Beebe said Arkansas officials are researching whether the price includes all required services, including medical care. Also, contracting with another state to house Arkansas prisoners would require a new law, the governor said.
The Governor also outlined a number of his proposals he wants adopted for prison reform in Arkansas. He said that prosecutors have been the most vocal group opposing some of the changes to date.
