A. Edward Newton as Literacy Coach

Edward Newton, an early twentieth century American industrialist, wrote popular essays about book collecting, a practice which placed him in the company of Henry E. Huntington, Henry Clay Folger, Henry Elkins Widener, and many others. This talk explains how Newton “advertised” the literary canon to America and, in the process, coached a generation of readers into becoming rare book collectors.
