The Lavaca School District is one of only six districts selected to receive the 2010 Arkansas Healthy School Board Award.

According to the Arkansas Department of Education, school boards across the state were given the opportunity to apply for the Healthy School Board Award in November.

The school boards had to answer questions about their districts’ health programs, projects, and policies. With rising obesity rates among children in our state and the subsequent diseases caused by obesity, state officials believe it is important for school boards to be involved in helping fight the battle.

Awards were given to the district with the highest score in their classification 1A-7A.  The winners were:
Class 7A: Springdale School District
Class 6A: El Dorado School District
Class 5A: Harrison School District
Class 3A: Lavaca School District
Class 2A: Cedar Ridge School District
Class 1A: Arkansas School for the Deaf.

The awards will be presented at the 2010 Arkansas School Board Association Conference on Dec. 10 at the Statehouse Convention Center in Little Rock.
