Little Rock-based Dillard’s announced Wednesday (Dec. 22) it will operate an “Internet fulfillment center” in Maumelle to support the continuing growth of its online business.

Dillard’s will purchase the former Target distribution facility and will create more 300 new jobs in the Maumelle (immediately west of Little Rock) area.

“We are tremendously pleased to announce our new Maumelle Internet Fulfillment Center. This new high-tech facility will be optimally equipped with advanced distribution and fulfillment capabilities to support the growth of our Internet store,” Dillard’s President Alex Dillard noted in a statement.

TalkBusiness.net, a content partner with The City Wire, first broke news of the $42 million deal in this Dec. 20 story.

According to the statement, Dillard’s plans to use “highly advanced” robotics and “improvements in ergonomics” to create a state-of-the-art distribution center that responds quickly and efficiently to online sales orders. Dillard’s expects the Maumelle 850,000-square-foot center to be operational in late 2012.

Dillard’s operates six distribution centers, including one in Mabelvale, Ark., and an Internet fulfillment center in Nashville.

Dillard’s ranks among the nation’s largest fashion apparel, cosmetics and home furnishings retailers with annual revenues exceeding $6.2 billion. The retailer, which employs about 2,300 in Arkansas, operates 294 Dillard’s locations and 14 clearance centers in 29 states.

“Dillard’s has decided to put its new Internet fulfillment center close to home, further bolstering the Central Arkansas economy," Gov. Mike Beebe said in the statement. "As one of Arkansas’s homegrown Fortune 500 companies, Dillard’s has played an important business role in our state for more than 70 years, and I hope that this facility will add to the Company’s success."

In addition to welcoming Dillard’s, Maumelle Mayor Mike Watson thanked Gov. Beebe, the Arkansas Economic Development Commission, Metro Little Rock Alliance,  and the Little Rock Regional Chamber of Commerce.
