Sustainability Consortium Welcomes Mars Inc. into Fold
Mars Inc. has joined the Sustainability Consortium in support of the organization’s science-based work toward a more sustainable global supply chain, the University of Arkansas announced in late September.
The consortium is an independent organization of global participants that work collaboratively to build a scientific foundation that drives innovation to improve consumer product sustainability. It is administered jointly by the UA and Arizona State University.
Mars is the latest organization to embrace the consortium’s product “life cycle” mission including social and environmental considerations.
“Mars believes that science-based assessment and allocation of life-cycle product impacts are critical to enabling a transition to a more sustainable production-consumption model,” Mars global sustainability director Kevin Rabinovitch said in a news release.
“The consortium’s work is vital to moving beyond a focus on conflicting measurement systems and on to driving real reductions in impacts across the supply chains delivering the products consumers love.”
Jon Johnson, co-director of the consortium and executive director of the University of Arkansas Applied Sustainability Center, welcomed Mars.
“They are a proven leader in the realm of corporate sustainability,” Johnson said in the release, “and their knowledge and leadership will be a tremendous asset.”
Mars Inc. is a private, family-owned company with more than 65,000 employees in 68 countries. Headquartered in McLean, Va., it reports more than $28 billion in revenue annually.
