Save (More) Money at Wal-Mart

One of our Whispers staff would choose anything short of a root canal over joining Facebook.

Another one doesn’t even have a debit card, for Pete’s sake.

In other words, you probably wouldn’t have to look very far to find a more technologically savvy group. We are big fans of bargains, however, and that’s why something we heard during Wal-Mart Stores Inc.‘s shareholders festivities caught our attention.

By dialing “#wmt” and answering a couple of questions – an easy-as-pie process that takes all of two minutes – customers are connected free of charge to a program that delivers up to four alerts per week via text messaging. The texts clue in subscribers on Wal-Mart’s latest price rollbacks or other special offers.

So far we’ve received news about deals on everything from barbecue sauce to tropical punch. Participants also are given the old prices along with the new ones, all the better to determine just how much money is being saved.

Frankly, it’s enough to make us wonder if we should delve a little deeper into all this newfangled technology. Just don’t expect us to tweet about it any time soon.
