Scene by Carson: April brings more than just a tax deadline

Editor’s note: Amanda Carson recently graduated from Ole Miss where she wore a cocktail dress and high heels to football games at which tailgating was conducted in a tent adorned with a chandelier. Prior to this she attended a private school in Memphis at which Southern manners and etiquette was stressed — which does not explain her football game decisions. Anyway, Amanda will attempt to infuse her Southern experiences, exposure and education into the arts and entertainment scene in the Fort Smith/Van Buren region.

April showers bring May flowers. Well, not sure if this is always true, but here are some dry Spring time events to lift any damp spirits that may come this way in April, weather permitting of course.

• Saturdays
7 a.m. to 12 p.m.
The Farmers Market will be in full swing this Spring. Crafts, fresh foods and fun for all.  In the parking lot at Second Street and Garrison Avenue in downtown Fort Smith.

• April 2
5 p.m. to 9 p.m.
It is no longer just something to drive by and look at anymore; it’s the Grand Reopening of the Park at West End. Ride the rides for free from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., followed by a dedication ceremony by Mayor Ray Baker. Visit the Web site of the city Parks & Recreation department for regular park hours.

• April 10
7 p.m.
Do you like fine foods, wine, art and the feel of a piano bar? Well, you’re flat-out crazy if you don’t. The Donald W. Reynolds Cancer Support House is hosting the 2010 Wine and Roses. Partake in a live wine auction and silent art auction. Ladies, the more your husband drinks the more money he will spend on wonderful auction items for you and it goes to a good cause. It’s a win-win and a no brainer. And guys, do not fear there will be an outdoor, interactive Grilling Station. To get tickets, visit the Cancer Support House Web site.

• April 13
10 a.m.
Looking for a lovely way to get in the Spring Spirit? What better way than a Garden Walk and the Magic of Spring Bulbs. The Botanical Gardens of the Ozarks in Fayetteville will lead a walking tour with Susan Regan and staff to showcase the beauty of Spring. Link here to learn more about the Botanical Gardens.

• April 15
Take a deep breath, start breathing again and have a glass of wine. Your taxes should be turned in and out of your control now. Nothing to do but wait, either for a big ole check or maybe a call from the IRS. Let’s hope it’s not the latter. Now if you haven’t got them done I suggest a bottle of Scotch and hunkering down for dear life ‘til it is.

• April 17
9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.
The Breast Cancer Survivor Breakfast is being held at the Annex of the Fort Smith Convention Center. Hosted by The Women’s Center at Sparks, Reynolds Cancer Support House and Mayor Ray Baker and emceed by Donna Bragg. Come celebrate life, love and happiness and let others honor you for your strength. Enjoy entertainment, giveaways, door prizes and fellowship. There is no admission, but reservations are required. • April 17
7:30 p.m.
Second Street Live presents Stanley Jordan as part of the Masters and Legends Series. His rare talent of two-handed and tapping technique has made him an outstanding and innovative guitarist. His unique style took him from playing on the streets of New York to an internationally known artist. Come see why this man can truly be called a Master and Legend of guitar. Tickets are $50, but well worth the experience.

• April 22
Ahh, Earth Day; also known as Tree Huggers Day, Hippie’s Favorite Day or Liberal Day. You can mock all you want, but if their ain’t no trees around, there ain’t no air to breath. We only have one Earth with LIMITED resources. So don’t be such a conservative, go plant a tree for goodness sakes.

• April 24
7 p.m. to 11 p.m.
The Junior League of Fort Smith celebrates 50 years of community service and is inviting the public to celebrate with them at their Celebrating Under the Stars Gala. Hosted at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Bryan Goodwin, the Gala will feature entertainment by JJ and the Giants, hors d’oeuvres and an open bar. Tickets are $55 and attire is black tie optional (for those that don’t know, that means no one is forcing you to dress up, but you darn well better look really nice). 7 p.m. 
Do you have an appreciation for the arts? Good, that means you are more cultured and classier than those around you, but it also means you would enjoy attending the 19th Annual Mayor’s Honors for Visual and Performing Arts. This Honor is awarded to three individuals and one business who promote the performing or visual arts in our community. Held at the Fort Smith Convention Center.  Call 784-2437 for more details.
